How does the company exemplify use of food waste?
Hungry Harvest sources imperfect fruits and vegetables direct from local and large scale growers that would otherwise go to waste due to cosmetic imperfection. This gives farmers another revenue stream to maximize the value of their total harvest, all while offering CSA style home delivery of this "ugly" produce starting at just $15 to customers in the DMV. For every delivery they make, they donate to hunger relief partners.
What makes nominee leader in use of food waste?
In the last 3 years, they've recovered 4 million pounds of food from avoidable waste serving over 30k total customers in the DMV, and donated 500k pounds more to food insecure families who rely on their Produce in a SNAP program for their weekly nutritional needs. Evan Lutz, the CEO and Founder has been awarded Forbes 30 under 30 award for his innovation in social entrepreneurship, and has forged a partnership with James Beard Foundation to help educate Chefs and advocates via the Chef Action Bootcamp series.
