What's "Ugli Fruit" Anyway?

This week, our fruit harvests are comin' with something totally new to us Hungry Harvesters! Say hello to Ugli Fruit. These guys were rejected for having scarring on their skin! How crazy.

What is Ugli Fruit?

Ugli Fruit is a form of tangelo, or a mixture of grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. While it isn't all that ugly, it does have a "meh" appearance. You can spot Ugli Fruit from its thick, yellow-green skin that's loose and leathery. Don't let its ugly exterior fool you though. Inside, it's totally delicious. It is mostly green and wrinkled until it is fully ripe, when it turns orange.

What does it taste like?

Like a grapefruit, orange, and tangerine mixture. So yum!

Is it good for you?

Uglis have 70 percent of the recommended daily value in Vitamin C, which is great for boosting your disease immunity, fighting infections, and important for the formation of collagen and maintaining artery elasticity. Calcium, of course, is in good supply, as well as vitamin A, and eight percent of your needed fiber per day. Ugli fruit is naturally fat- and cholesterol-free and has a low glycemic index! What do I do with it?

Snack on it like you would with an orange! Peel and slice it to top your yogurt, fruit salad, or eat it as a grab and go treat.
